Vijayawada: Nandigama police took three individuals into custody in connection with a case filed after stones were pelted against TDP president and then opposition leader Nara Chandrababu Naidu in 2022. The incident took place on Nov 5, 2022, near Rythu Bazar on Chandarlapadu Road, where streetlights were turned off, and stones were thrown at Naidu’s convoy, injuring his chief security officer, Madhusudan Rao.
Allegedly, streetlights were deliberately turned off as Naidu’s convoy passed through the area and stones were hurled at the vehicles. Despite the registration of a case following the incident, there was little progress in the investigation during the previous YSRCP regime, leading to allegations of neglect.
The recent breakthrough came after the police intensified their investigation, detaining three suspects: Kanikanti Sajjan Rao (50), Bejawada Karthik (30), a former rowdy sheeter, and Parimi Kishore (30), all residents of Nandigama. Y V V L Naidu, Nandigama inspector, confirmed that the accused are currently being interrogated to uncover further details about the premeditation and motive behind the attack.
The incident, which occurred during a politically charged period, drew sharp criticism from the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), who accused the then YSRCP govt of orchestrating the attack to intimidate its leader. TDP leaders called for a thorough and impartial investigation, alleging that the lack of progress in the case was a deliberate attempt to shield the culprits.
The recent police actions have brought the case back into the spotlight, with TDP supporters demanding swift justice and a fair trial. Meanwhile, the police have assured a comprehensive investigation to ascertain all aspects of the incident and identify any additional individuals involved.
