Vijayawada: Notwithstanding the turbulence in the Middle East following war, Andhra Pradesh govt is hopeful of reaping rich dividends from banana exports during the current season.
State govt wanted to increase the exports by almost 100 percent with the growing crop area. The horticulture department has successfully tuned the farmers of drought-hit regions in Rayalaseema and upland areas in Nellore districts to move to banana cultivation to make huge gains.State govt has set the bar very high by fixing the export target at 1 lakh metric tonnes for 2024-25.
“We are hopeful of achieving the target as both the weather conditions and mood among the farmers are positive. We are taking all possible measures to increase the exports to help farmers as chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu has advised to us walk an extra-mile to make Rayalaseema a horticulture hub,” said special chief secretary (agriculture) Budithi Rajasekhar.
He explained that banana exports were around 48,000 metric tonnes during 2022-23 which crossed 50 thousand metric tonnes during the last fiscal year. AP, as a leading banana producer in the country broke all the previous records by posting 140 crore net on exports during 2022-23 itself.
Riding on the high demand and value, state govt wanted to take the export value to 400 crore during the current fiscal.
