HYDERABAD: In a boost for the BRS on Telangana Formation Day, its candidate Naveen Kumar Reddy emerged victorious in the Mahabubnagar local authorities’ constituency MLC bypoll.
The win in chief minister A Revanth Reddy’s home district comes as a silver lining for the BRS amidst unfavourable exit poll predictions for the party in the Lok Sabha elections.
Naveen Kumar Reddy won by 109 votes after securing 762 votes, while Congress’ Manne Jeevan Reddy got 653 votes. Independent candidate Sudharshan Goud secured just one vote.
Although the polling for the MLC bypoll took place on March 28, the counting was delayed due to the ongoing general elections. The bypoll was necessitated by the vacancy left by Kasireddy Narayana Reddy after his election as MLA (Congress) from Kalwakurthi constituency.
The counting began at 8am on Sunday at the Local Government Boys Junior College in Mahabubnagar. Of the 1,439 registered voters, an impressive 1,437 cast their votes. Of the polled votes, 21 were declared invalid or rejected by election officials, leaving only 1,416 valid votes.
BRS working president KT Rama Rao, former minister T Harish Rao and other party leaders thanked voters for keeping faith in the leadership of former chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao.
“Winning the MLC seat in the chief minister’s home district is a moment of pride for us.
“This victory not only brings joy but also significantly increases our responsibilities. We are confident that this victory is just the beginning and will pave the way for many more successes in the future.
“This result once again proves that BRS is the household party of Telangana, reflecting the true aspirations of the people,” KTR said.
