BC Panel Urges Action Against Village Development Committees Amid Social Boycotts | Hyderabad News

Hyderabad: Backward Classes Commission chairman G Niranjan has urged DGP Jitender to take strict action against instances of social boycotts in village reported from districts, primarily Nizamabad and Nirmal.
Throughout numerous public hearings conducted across the state for the BC survey, the commission told TOI that it has received alarming number of complaints about social boycotts in various villages. Niranjan said individuals from BC communities were being targeted and socially ostracised under the guise of action by village development committees (VDCs).
“The legality of VDCs is a pressing issue that cannot be ignored. The seriousness of such heinous acts must be addressed in order to protect fundamental human rights in our society,” he said in his letter to the DGP.
In interactions with the Backward Classes Commission, various collectors confirmed that VDCs lack any legal standing, further highlighting the urgent need for intervention, he said.
Niranjan said the commission has also gathered reports of communities facing intimidation when they fail to adhere to the arbitrary demands imposed by VDCs. For instance, a complaint from the Are-Katika community revealed that VDCs were coercing them to sell meat at unjust prices, undermining their livelihoods.
Niranjan said the commission unequivocally condemned these actions, which are not only against individuals’ basic rights but also threaten the fabric of society.
“It is critical that we stand against such injustice and ensure the protection of all communities,” he said.
