Revanth Reddy closes big; Google chooses Hyderabad for major cybersecurity hub

In a significant move that underscores Telangana’s growing prominence as a global technology hub, the state government announced on Wednesday, 4 December, that Google would establish its first Safety Engineering Centre (GSEC) in Hyderabad.

This cutting-edge facility will be the second of its kind in the Asia-Pacific region and only the fifth in the world, following centres in Dublin, Munich, and Malaga.

The GSEC in Hyderabad will serve as a key centre for cybersecurity innovation, focusing on developing advanced safety engineering solutions, artificial intelligence-driven security tools, and cybersecurity research.

It will play a vital role in enhancing digital safety for businesses, governments, and individuals across India while contributing to global efforts in securing the digital ecosystem.

A transformational partnership

The announcement was made following months of strategic collaboration between Google and the Telangana government, led by Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy.

The partnership was formalised after intensive discussions, including a crucial meeting in August 2024, where the chief minister and Telangana’s IT and Industries Minister Dr D Sridhar Babu, met with Google executives at the company’s headquarters in the United States. Their efforts proved pivotal in securing this transformative investment for the state.

The chief minister expressed his pride in the achievement, stating, “We are incredibly proud that Google has chosen Hyderabad for this landmark project. This partnership reflects Hyderabad’s status as a global leader in IT and innovation. With GSEC, we are positioning Hyderabad not only as a tech hub but as the global center for cybersecurity excellence.”

The Hyderabad GSEC is expected to create thousands of direct and indirect employment opportunities, attracting top-tier cybersecurity professionals, researchers, and engineers to the city. In addition, the centre will facilitate skill development and training initiatives, further strengthening India’s digital infrastructure and cybersecurity capabilities.

Hyderabad: A global hub for tech and innovation

Hyderabad has long been at the forefront of India’s technology landscape, housing major global tech giants such as Google, Microsoft, Apple, Amazon, and Meta. This new partnership will solidify the city’s position as a leader in digital innovation and safety.

“The GSEC will help Hyderabad emerge as a global capital for safety engineering and digital security. This facility will drive innovation in cybersecurity, providing new opportunities for skill development, research, and job creation,” said Royal Hansen, Chief Information Officer (CIO) at Google.

“The alignment of our vision with CM Revanth Reddy’s long-term focus on Hyderabad’s growth and its digital future is truly exciting.”

Telangana’s vision for a digital future

The establishment of GSEC is seen as a major milestone in Revanth Reddy’s broader vision of transforming Telangana into a $1 trillion economy.

As part of this vision, the Telangana government is also focused on leveraging advanced technologies to address critical challenges such as climate change, urban development, and digital safety.

“We see this partnership with Google as an important step towards building a secure and connected future for Telangana,” the chief minister said.

“Our T-Fiber initiative, which aims to connect over 47 lakh rural homes with high-speed internet, will now be safeguarded through the integration of secure Android TV and smart home technologies,” he added.

Expanding partnerships in technology and education

In addition to the GSEC, Telangana and Google are exploring further collaborations in various sectors. These include the potential establishment of a Cloud Centre of Excellence (Google C-CoE) in Hyderabad, which would focus on advanced cloud technologies and AI-driven solutions.

The partnership also envisions the creation of an Intelligent Traffic Management System, powered by Google Maps and real-time AI analysis, to streamline traffic flow across the city.

Furthermore, Google is looking to collaborate with the Telangana government to enhance education and skill development through the establishment of a Google Startup Hub and initiatives aimed at fostering AI and cybersecurity skills.

A vision for the future

Hansen highlighted that Hyderabad’s growing tech ecosystem, combined with the government’s forward-thinking policies, make it uniquely suited to lead the charge in cybersecurity and other digital innovations.

“Hyderabad has the potential to become the global centre for safety engineering, and we are excited to be part of this transformation,” he said.

In closing, Revanth Reddy thanked Google executives, including Arijit Sarkar, VP of Global Google Tech in Hyderabad, and Sreenivasa Reddy, Managing Director of Government Affairs at Google India, for their support in bringing this partnership to fruition.

“This is just the beginning. We look forward to many more opportunities to collaborate with Google and other global partners to make Hyderabad one of the smartest and safest cities in the world,” he said.
