A 46-year-old patient, M. Appalanaidu, who presented with a massive staghorn stone measuring 5×5 cm in his left kidney, was successfully treated at KIMS ICON Hospital. The patient was passing blood in his urine for three months and had consulted multiple hospitals, where his condition could not be addressed.
Eventually, he consulted Dr. K. Abhiram, consultant urologist at KIMS ICON Hospital, Visakhapatnam. Upon thorough evaluation, it was discovered that the staghorn stone had significantly impacted his kidney, reducing it to only 30% functionality. Dr. Abhiram opted for a minimally invasive laparoscopic approach to remove the stone. The surgery was meticulously performed in a single session, ensuring no additional damage to the kidney.
The patient recovered quickly and was discharged in just two days after the surgery and is in a stable and improved condition.
Staghorn kidney stones are massive stones that occupy a significant portion of the kidney, often impairing its functionality and causing severe complications such as recurrent infections and blood in the urine. These stones require complete removal to prevent further damage, but their treatment poses significant challenges due to the associated risks, including sepsis and extensive infections. Various procedures like open surgery, PCNL (Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy), and laparoscopic pyelolithotomy are used to address such cases, according to a statement issued by the hospital.
Laparoscopic pyelolithotomy not only ensures precise stone removal but also allows for quicker recovery and preserving kidney function, according to Dr. Abhiram.
