NTR district to transform Krishna-Godavari confluence as premier tourist destination

Vijayawada: NTR district collector Lakshmi Shah announced plans to develop the Krishna-Godavari confluence, a sacred site, into a major tourist centre.
Key attractions like Pavitra Sangam, Punnami Ghat and Gandhi Hill are set to undergo significant upgrades to draw more visitors.
Speaking about Vijayawada’s tourism potential, the collector emphasised the need for well-maintained tourist spots to boost the city’s appeal.
“Tourism development is crucial for the growth of Vijayawada, part of Andhra Pradesh’s capital region,” he said, adding that revitalising existing attractions with new features is a priority.
The collector noted that Pavitra Sangam once thrived as a bustling tourist destination. Events like the Jala Harathi ceremony at the confluence previously attracted thousands, accompanied by vibrant food stalls and amusement activities. However, after the ceremony was moved to Durga Ghat near Kanakadurga Temple post-COVID, tourism at Pavitra Sangam dwindled. Today, the site hosts only a ferry boating service, and even access roads have deteriorated.
The TOI in its columns highlighted the pathetic condition of Pavitra Sangam a few times.
The collector said the govt is committed to reviving the area. “A comprehensive blueprint is being prepared in collaboration with the tourism, endowments, and irrigation departments,” he said. The plan includes long-term strategies to enhance infrastructure and tourist facilities.
Special attention will also be given to Punnami Ghat and Bhavani Island. Proposals include introducing water sports to attract more visitors. Highlighting Vijayawada’s strategic location in Amaravati, Shah remarked, “Thousands visit the city daily. Developing nearby attractions will elevate the city’s tourism profile and draw visitors from across the country.”
The collector said the administration’s focus is on making Vijayawada a prominent destination, ensuring tourists leave with memorable experiences.
