Garbage transport negligence sparks safety fears in Vizag

visakhapatnam: Negligence during garbage removal operations in Visakhapatnam has become a major concern for residents. Incidents of waste falling from transport vehicles have led to increased accidents. The waste management process, which involves transferring garbage from municipal solid waste facilities (MSFs) to the dumping yard at Kapuluppada, is frequently mishandled by personnel.

According to guidelines from the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC), waste must be securely covered during transit to prevent dispersal by wind. Unfortunately, both drivers and crews often neglect this crucial precaution. A recent incident highlighted this negligence when a lorry carrying uncovered garbage caused a dangerous situation on the national highway. As the vehicle accelerated, debris, including coconut shells, was dislodged, injuring a two-wheeler rider who lost control after being struck by the debris.

The main issue is the lack of proper measures to secure waste during transportation. Many lorries operate without appropriate coverings, allowing garbage to scatter on roadways and pose risks to other motorists. Local resident P. Chalam has called for immediate action from authorities, urging stricter enforcement of regulations that mandate the proper covering of garbage trucks.

Residents are demanding that municipal authorities closely monitor the waste removal process and implement stricter safety protocols. Until reforms are enacted, the danger of debris during garbage transportation will persist, jeopardizing public safety. The community is urging local authorities for prompt intervention to ensure safe streets in Visakhapatnam.
