The State government has decided to conduct surprise checks in social welfare hostels across the State on Saturday to gain first-hand information about their conditions.

Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy will lead the administration in conducting surprise checks. Ministers, Chief Secretary A. Santhi Kumari and senior bureaucrats will also conduct surprise inspections in the areas allotted to them. The Chief Minister, Ministers and officials will have lunch along with the inmates to ascertain the quality of food that is being served to students.

The Chief Minister is likely to inspect a welfare hostel in located in Hyderabad, Ranga Reddy or Vikarabad district while the Ministers were tasked with conducting similar visits in different districts.

The development assumes significance in the light of reports of incidents of food poisoning in social welfare hostels leading to hospitalisation of inmates. Over eight lakh students are residing in welfare hostels and the government had recently hiked the diet charges by 40% and cosmetic charges by 200%. This is in addition to creation of required facilities in the hostels spending ₹667.25 crore.

The government had appointed the Education Commission headed by retired bureaucrat Akunuri Murali to constantly monitor the conditions prevailing in the hostels. The surprise checks, according to officials, would enable the administration to ensure that students were provided more qualitative food as better educational facilities.
