New varsity to honour Potti Sriramulu


Vijayawada: Chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu has said that the govt will soon set up Telugu university in the name of martyr Sri Potti Sriramulu to remember his sacrifices for decades to come.
He said that they are providing good governance with the spirit of great people like Sri Potti Sriramulu, who laid down his life demanding a separate statehood for Telugu people six decades ago.
The chief minister along with deputy chief minister Pawan Kalyan and cabinet ministers paid floral tributes to Sri Potti Sriramulu as part of ‘atmarpana dinotsavam’ to mark the death anniversary of late freedom fighter here on Sunday. Addressing the gathering, the chief minister said that although every day is important in the history of Andhra Pradesh, Dec 15 is remarkable due to the sacrifice of Sri Potti Sriramulu. He said that Nellore district was named after Sri Potti Sriramulu when he was the CM of undivided state and they would continue to work with the spirit of legendary Telugu leader, the only leader who continued his hunger fast for 58 days and sacrificed himself to achieve the goal of statehood for Telugu people in the midst of terrible conditions.
“Sri Potti Sriramulu is immortal. His sacrifice led to formation of linguistic states. Pawan Kalyan suggested to take up programmes to spread the spirit of Sri Potti Sriramulu, considering the need to remember such leaders forever. We will set up Telugu University in the name of Sri Potti Sriramulu very shortly and also a memorial in Amaravati,” said the chief minister.
He said that they would take up several developmental works in the native place of Sri Potti Sriramulu along with construction of a bridge, drinking water scheme, a high school and primary health center.
