Fancy car numbers with TG fetch RTO 82 cr at auctions | Hyderabad News

Hyderabad: The transition from TS to TG vehicle registration in the city has sparked a surge in demand for special registration numbers, generating Rs 82 crore in revenue since its introduction in March.
Vehicle owners, particularly those with luxury cars, are now willing to pay hefty sums to secure prestigious numbers like 0001, 0007, and 8055, beyond the traditionally popular 9999 & 9 series. Recently, the TG 09 0001 series fetched Rs 11.11 lakh, while in May, a car owner paid a record Rs 25.5 lakh for the ‘9999′ registration number—the highest bid ever recorded in the state.
The bidding process has grown highly competitive, with applicants eager to invest substantial amounts. When multiple bids are placed for a specific number on the same day, the RTA conducts online auctions between 2 pm and 4 pm on working days. The highest bid wins the coveted number.
The RTA processes applications daily, assigning numbers sequentially in alphabetical order.
Premium numbers like 1, 9, 999, and 9999 start at Rs 50,000, while secondary preferred numbers such as 99, 333, 555, 666, 777, 888, and combinations like 2222, 3333, 4444, and 5555 begin at Rs 30,000.
Fancy numbers gained momentum since 2000
“Since the early 2000s, the trend of choosing special numbers has gained momentum, with the Khairatabad RTA office and its TG 09 registration code holding particular significance. The Khairtabad RTA’s high revenue can also be attributed to its jurisdiction over premium localities like Banjara Hills and Jubilee Hills. Buyers typically include industrialists, realtors, pharmaceutical companies, construction firms, private enterprises, politicians, and celebrities,” said a senior RTA official.
What started as a trend has now evolved into a status symbol within Hyderabad’s social circles. Vehicle owners increasingly see these distinctive numbers as a reflection of their personal brand. The trend has also captured the attention of younger generations, with the number 8055 being especially popular, as it resembles the word “BOSS” when displayed on digital plates.
