Manmohan Singh’s Death: Are banks, schools, colleges closed today? Public holiday declared in Karnataka, Telangana – Details inside – India News


A seven-day state mourning will be observed nationwide to honor the late former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who passed away last night. During this period, the national flag will be flown at half-mast across India, as announced by the Union Home Ministry. In a directive sent to all chief secretaries of states and union territories on Thursday, the ministry also confirmed that Singh will be given a state funeral, and no official entertainment will take place throughout the mourning period. The Union Cabinet is expected to meet at 11 am today to discuss the national mourning arrangements.

The Karnataka government has declared a public holiday for schools, colleges, and offices on Friday (December 27) to mourn the passing of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. The Union government has announced seven days of national mourning as a mark of respect for the late PM.

Bank Holiday on December 27?

Following Karnataka’s announcement, questions arose about whether Friday, December 27, would also be observed as a holiday in other states. According to the RBI’s holiday calendar, banks in the Kohima region of Nagaland are closed today for Christmas celebrations. There is uncertainty regarding a bank holiday in other regions following the Telangana government’s announcement of a public holiday to mourn the passing of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. As of now, there has been no confirmation of a bank holiday in areas other than Kohima.

School, Colleges closed today, December 27? 

  • Karnataka: Schools, colleges, and government offices are closed today, as per the state government’s directive.
  • Telangana: The state government, led by CM Revanth Reddy, has declared today a holiday for government offices and educational institutions, according to reports. However, this information couldn’t be independently verified.
  • Delhi: CM Atishi has canceled all government programs scheduled for Friday.

Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s Passing

Dr. Manmohan Singh, aged 92, passed away on Thursday evening at AIIMS, Delhi, due to age-related health complications. A press release from AIIMS confirmed the news, stating that he experienced a sudden loss of consciousness at home on December 26, 2024. Despite resuscitation efforts, he was declared dead at 9:51 pm. The nation mourns the loss of the two-term Prime Minister, remembered for his integrity, economic reforms, and statesmanship.

Confirming former PM Manmohan’s death, AIIMS said in a press release, “With profound grief, we inform the demise of former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, aged 92. He was being treated for age-related medical conditions and had sudden loss of consciousness at home on 26th December 2024. Resuscitative measures were started immediately at home. He was brought to the Medical Emergency at AIIMS, New Delhi at 8:06 PM. Despite all efforts, he could not be revived and was declared dead at 9:51 PM.”
