3,379 convictions achieved by Guntur district police in 2024: SP


The Guntur district police registered 6,515 cases in 2024, compared to 8,195 cases last year. The number of cases related to cybercrime and crime against women fell. Superintendent of Police S. Satish Kumar said that about 432 people lost their lives and 862 were injured in 1,024 road accidents in the district.

Giving the annual crime data of Guntur district here on Sunday, the SP said the victims lost about ₹27.18 crore and the police froze ₹10.69 crore in 221 cybercrime cases. Last year, 286 cyber offences were registered, he said.

Regarding crime against women, 1,035 cases have been registered, compared to 1,368 cases in 2023. About 77 rape and 146 Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act cases were registered in the district in 2024.

Under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 238 persons were arrested, and 222 kg ganja and 0.5 kg liquid ganja were seized in 62 cases this year.

As many as 3,379 accused were convicted in various courts out of 5,277 cases, while 1,898 were acquitted.

Number of persons convicted in 2023 were 4,515 in 6,548 cases, the SP explained.

He said the public lost ₹10.53 crore in property offences, and police recovered ₹4 crore (38.16% recovery). The detection rate in property cases was 33.11%.

“We detected a few important cases, including the serial cyanide killings, in which five persons were murdered by offering a cyanide-laced drink, under Chebrole police station. Police arrested a habitual offender, Pothineni Gopi, who allegedly raped a B. Pharmacy student posing as a police officer. In another case, Kothapet police traced an infant kidnap case, which occurred in Guntur Government General Hospital (GGH) and arrested three accused. The cases were detected by using CCTV footage,” Mr. Satish Kumar said.
