Visakhapatnam: The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) will enforce a ban on single-use plastics in the city from Jan 1.
The officials of the civic body conducted a skill-upgrade training program on alternatives to single-use plastics and inspection principles here at the GVMC office on Saturday.
During the event, mayor Hari Venkat Kumari spoke about the importance of driving away the “plastic demon” that is affecting the world, starting from Visakhapatnam.
“Several awareness programs have been conducted over the past five years to educate public about the harmful effects of plastic use. Plastic takes two to three hundred years to decompose and harms both humans and aquatic life, contributing to spreading of diseases like cancer. Hence, stalls offering alternative products will be set up at markets, farmer markets, and fruit shops,” the major said.TNN
