‘No new engg colleges in Greater Hyd in 2025-26’ | Hyderabad News

Hyderabad: The ensuing 2025-26 academic year will see no new engineering college come up in Greater Hyderabad, with the Telangana govt directing universities not to issue any new permissions. Reason: Excessive concentration of engineering institutes in the region.
“We are not going to permit any new college to start in Hyderabad, Ranga Reddy, or Medchal-Malkajgiri districts,” said a senior official from the state’s technical education department, adding, “There is a need to establish more colleges in districts to stop migration to Greater Hyderabad. The latter, though, is already overcrowded.”
In fact, state officials said that they have already approached the UGC and AICTE, requesting them not to sanction new permissions for any new colleges in Telangana without keeping the state in the loop.
‘NOC applications on hold’ Currently, Telangana has 175 engineering colleges with over a lakh seats of which 60% (approx) are in Greater Hyderabad. While Medchal Malkajgiri and Ranga Reddy districts have about 45 colleges each, there are 20 in Hyderabad.
Districts like Adilabad, Nirmal, Mulugu etc, on the other hand, don’t have a single engineering college.
Incidentally, this ruling comes at a time when the Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University, Hyderabad (JNTUH) alone has received about 10 applications seeking the mandatory no objection certificate (NOC) for autonomous status to run engineering institutes. All these applications have been put on hold, sources said. Applications for introducing new courses, additional seats, and the merger of courses have also been stalled. As on date, Telangana has 90 autonomous engineering colleges—83 under JNTUH (half of them were sanctioned in the last three to four years), and seven under Osmania University (OU).
“There is a need to streamline our colleges. We have many autonomous colleges and deemed-to-be universities. Because of their increased presence, other colleges are suffering as they are unable to attract more students. Further, there are also questions being raised over the quality of education provided in these institutes,” said V Balakista Reddy, chairman, Telangana Council of Higher Education and in-charge vice-chancellor of JNTUH.
