Karwar: Ten people were killed and 19 injured when a truck transporting vegetables overturned on National Highway 63 near Gullapur in Yellapur taluk of Uttara Kannada district during the early hours of Wednesday.
According to sources, the truck was traveling from Savanur in Haveri district to Kumta, carrying vegetables for the weekly market. The vehicle had around 29 people on board, including three in the cabin. When the truck neared Gullapur around 4.15 am, approximately 20 km from Yellapur, the driver reportedly lost control, causing the truck to overturn.
Local police from Yellapur station arrived at the scene and initiated rescue operations. The injured were rushed to KIMS Hospital in Hubballi for medical care.
Eight individuals died on the spot, while one succumbed to injuries en route to the hospital and another passed away later.
The deceased have been identified as Fayaz (51), Wasim (25), Ejaz (20), Sadik (30), gulam Hussain (25), Imtiaz (30), Alfaz (42), Jilani (20), Aslam (24 ) and Jalal (29).
The remaining 19 suffered injuries. Ten people are under treatment at KMCRI Hubballi.
Haveri Deputy Commissioner Dr Vijayamahantesh B Danammanavar said that the Chief Minister has announced Rs 3 lakh for the kin of the deceased person under CM relief fund.
The DC also visited KMCRI and spoke to the 10 injured who are presently being treated there.
Expressing his condolences, Haveri MP and former Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai mourned the loss of lives in the accident. In a statement on ‘X’, he noted that the victims were from economically disadvantaged families who relied on small-scale trade for their livelihood.
Bommai urged the government to ensure adequate compensation for the families of the deceased and to bear the medical expenses of the injured. He also called for a thorough investigation into the accident to prevent such incidents in the future.
