Hyderabad: A 22-year-old driver, who suffered serious burns in the boat fire accident in Hussainsagar on Sunday, succumbed to injuries while undergoing treatment at a corporate hospital in Secunderabad on Tuesday morning.
The police said M Ganapathi, a native of East Godavari district, came to the city in a transport vehicle loaded with firecrackers to burst them during Bharatha Matha Maha Harathi at Peoples Plaza near Necklace Road on January 26. He came to the city along with another driver Venkat.
However, fire broke out when Bharatha Matha Foundation was organizing maha harathi at Peoples Plaza. While burning fire crackers between 8.30 pm and 9 pm from a boat, accidentally one cracker missed the direction and entered the boat and all the crackers got burnt along with the boat. Due to this, the jetty was also burnt and some persons in the boat suffered burn injuries.
Two boat drivers D Sunil and Palle Pranith along with Ganapathi also suffered injuries in the incident even as a hunt is on to trace one more person S Ajay, who went missing after the incident. The police said Ganapathi’s condition was serious as he suffered 92 per cent burn injuries in the incident.
Based on a complaint lodged by Lumbini Park unit manager P Prahbudas, the police booked a case against event organizer Vasudeva Reddy and took up investigation.
The police said that rescue teams were continuing their efforts since Sunday to trace Ajay, who is a B.Tech student and resident of Nagaram.
Following the death of Ganapathi, the police decided to alter the case that was previously booked as fire accident to Section 106 (1) of the BNS and the body was handed over to the family members after an autopsy at the Gandhi hospital mortuary.
