A flurry of activity was witnessed at Visakhapatnam International Airport on Wednesday morning as special teams were busy rescuing people trapped in the terminal building to safety during a mock drill organised to test the preparedness for emergency situations.
Ropes with pulleys were used to rescue the dummy victims. The mock drill was organised under the aegis of the NDRF, SDRF, Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (APSDMA), Airports Authority of India (AAI) in association with other departments.
As part of the exercise undertaken in a simulated environment, rescue teams were seen carrying infants and children in their arms as they glided down the ropes from the top of the building to the ground. Doctors examined the victims and administered them first aid. Stretchers were ready and the victims were rushed to the waiting ambulances to shift them to hospitals.
Fire Services Department personnel were seen dousing flames with foam. The police personnel ensured law and order. The mock drill lasted for around 45 minutes.
