Hyderabad: A seminar, “UGC Regulations – Interference in State Universities” will be organised by the Telangana Education Commission (TEC) in the city on Thursday.
It will deliberate on UGC draft regulation 2025, which has led to a nationwide debate on the boundaries within which central agencies such as the UGC must function if the autonomy of universities is to be ensured, and the rights of state govts under the federal structure of the Constitution are to be respected.
“Several states such as Tamil Nadu and Kerala have already taken a public view and passed resolutions in the respective assemblies raising objections to the proposed guidelines.
“While a range of issues are being debated, the two most significant, contentious issues are about the mode of appointment prescribed for the selection of vice-chancellors of all universities across the country, and entry level recruitment process and requirements for assistant professors,” said PL Vishweshar Rao, member, TEC.
B Sudarshan Reddy, former judge of the Supreme Court and MLC M Kondandaram will take part in the meeting along with former vice-chancellors and retired professors.
The event will be held at the SCERT (State Council of Educational Research and Training) building in the city. It is being organised to provide further insights into the draft refutations and their long-term implications for higher education in the country.
