Patna: East Central Railway (ECR) has completed electrification across all five of its divisions – Danapur, Sonepur, Samastipur, DDU and Dhanbad – marking a key development in its rail network. This step is part of Indian Railways’ broader goal of reducing carbon emissions and modernising its infrastructure.
“The journey of rail electrification in India began on Feb 3, 1925. Over the years, ECR has expanded its electrification projects, improving connectivity and reducing dependency on fossil fuels. The completion of full electrification aligns with Indian Railways’ commitment to sustainability,” ECR’s chief public relations officer (CPRO) Saraswati Chandra said.
He added that ECR has also been working towards reducing its carbon footprint by adopting solar energy. “We are installing solar panels to generate clean energy as part of our strategy to power railway infrastructure in an environmentally responsible manner,” he said.
To further sustainability efforts, green station buildings are being developed to enhance energy efficiency and environmental conservation. These structures incorporate renewable energy sources, rainwater harvesting and eco-friendly materials to minimise the environmental impact of railway operations.
Sonepur divisional railway manager (DRM) Vivek Bhushan Sood said, “With the completion of 100% electrification in the division, we have also undertaken a large-scale sapling plantation drive to improve air quality and create green spaces around railway stations and tracks.” He added that this initiative would help counteract the effects of urbanisation and climate change.
Danapur DRM Jayant Kumar Choudhary described the electrification milestone as “a major step in modernising rail infrastructure while advancing sustainability goals.” He highlighted ongoing efforts such as integrating solar power, developing green station buildings and sapling plantation drives as tangible measures contributing towards environmental responsibility.
Pointing out the operational advantages of electric locomotives, CPRO Chandra said, “They have a greater hauling capacity compared to diesel locomotives, making them more efficient for railway operations.”
