Power intake may go up by 35% in next 4 yrs | Vijayawada News


Vijayawada: The energy dept is anticipating a big increase in power consumption across Andhra Pradesh in the next four years. The total power consumption is expected to go up by 35 percent.
According to estimates, consumption is expected to touch 99,150 million units by 2029. The consumption in 2024 was around 70,361 million units. The energy dept has put the actual requirement at 1,10,203 million units in 2029, including transmission and distribution losses. The state has been witnessing a steep increase in energy consumption in the last four years. The supply, too, has gone up by 22.5%. Power consumption jumped to a record 80,151 million units during 2023-24, from 65,414 million units in 2020. Interestingly, the state’s energy consumption in the first nine months of the current fiscal has already touched 58,555 million units. The installed capacity in Andhra Pradhesh, as on March 31, 2023, is 19,832 MW, which includes 9,390 MW of thermal, 1,774 MW of APGenco Hydel, 907 MW of gas projects, 134 MW nuclear, with renewable energy comprising of 7,627 MW. While domestic consumption is expected to touch 24,160 milllion units from the present 18,329 million units, the commercial sector is expected to witness a consumption of 7,351 million units, up from the present 5,650 million units. Public lighting consumption is also expected to go up slightly, from 328 to 390 million units. High-tech industries is one area which is expected to grow exponentially in the next four years. The energy dept estimates that this sector is likely to consume around 32,877 million units, a big jump from the existing 21,021 million units, which is a nearly 50 percent increase in four years.
“The estimates were readied based on projections that big industries will start operating in the state in the next three-four years,” said a senior official from the energy dept. The dept admitted that transmission and distribution losses are expected to remain nearly constant despite the govt’s plans to bring them down. T&D losses have been projected to touch 10.03 percent from the existing 10.07 percent.
