AP holds a crucial role in India’s coconut sector, with five percent of the total cultivation area and eight percent of the country’s total coconut production. The state’s coconut production showed steady growth, rising from 107.3 lakh metric tonnes in 2019-20 to 118.16 lakh metric tonnes in 2023-24.
The economic contribution of AP’s coconut industry also saw a notable increase. The state’s Gross Value of Output (GVO) grew from 1,814.15 crore in 2018-19 to 2,763.24 crore in 2022-23, reflecting its expanding role in the national market.
In terms of coconut processing, the country produced 12.94 lakh tonnes of copra (both milling and ball copra) in the year 2022-23, of which AP accounted for 0.65 LMT, primarily used for oil extraction and other value-added products.
While relatively smaller in comparison to leading states, AP’s processing sector is steadily developing.
India continues to be one of the world’s largest producers of coconut, with Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and AP leading the industry. In 2023-24, Karnataka recorded the highest production with 50.08 LMT, followed by Tamil Nadu with 39.43 LMT, Kerala contributed 38.94 LMT, and AP produced 11.81 LMT, solidifying its growing presence in the sector.
Beyond raw coconut production, India has a thriving coconut processing industry. The estimated copra (dried coconut kernel) production in 2022-23 was 12.94 LMT, which was further processed into 5.58 LMT of coconut oil and 2.79 LMT of oil cake.
