Hyderabad: The Telangana high court has halted the proposed construction of an integrated municipal solid waste (MSW) processing unit at Pyaranagar village in Gummadidala mandal in Sangareddy district, citing violations of rules and provisions in setting up the plant. However, the court allowed the laying of roads to the project site.
Justice K Lakshman issued interim directions on Wednesday, restraining the state govt and GHMC from proceeding with the project, which aims to process 25% of the MSW generated in GHMC limits—approximately 2,000 tonnes per day. Groundwork for the facility has already begun.
The petition was filed by A Swarnalatha, who argued that the required permissions for the proposed site had not been obtained, and no measures had been taken to prevent pollution in the surrounding areas. Her counsel, PSS Kailash Nath, highlighted that Pyaranagar is located 15 km from the Dundigal air base, and the wing commander had raised objections. He also noted that no environmental clearances or environmental impact assessment (EIA) had been conducted, and the project could cause air and water pollution, as the site is near the Nallavally reserve forest.
Swarnalatha also raised concerns about the odour control system, neutralisers used in compost plants, and the lack of measures to address gases from the sanitary landfill. Locals have raised issues regarding leachate overflow into downstream lakes, which could affect aquatic life.
