The Telangana government is embarking on an ambitious project to gather detailed information about the city’s infrastructure through a comprehensive LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) survey. Building on the success of the ‘One Map Gurgaon’ initiative, this project aims to consolidate crucial data about Hyderabad into a single, accessible platform. The survey will cover approximately 2,050 square kilometers, including the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) area and regions extending to the outer ring road.
Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has emphasized the importance of this survey in improving urban planning and infrastructure management. The LiDAR technology will provide precise, three-dimensional data about various infrastructure elements, including the road network, water supply, electricity, sewage, and emergency services like fire and traffic police. This information is expected to play a vital role in future urban development and disaster management efforts.
The LiDAR survey is anticipated to be completed within six months for the GHMC area, with the outer ring road area expected to be finalized by the end of the year. Officials from the municipal administration and urban development departments are currently finalizing the tendering process, and work is set to commence shortly. The state government believes that this comprehensive mapping will aid in identifying infrastructure gaps, especially in rapidly developing areas where new colonies are emerging.
In addition to the LiDAR survey, the GHMC has already initiated a pilot drone survey covering 625 square kilometers. This drone assessment aims to identify unassessed and underassessed properties, thereby enhancing the city’s revenue collection. While drone technology has its advantages, the government opted for the more advanced LiDAR method due to its superior accuracy, which is crucial for effective urban planning.
Looking ahead, the government plans to develop a mobile application that will integrate all data gathered from the ‘One Map Hyderabad’ project. This digital platform will make essential information available to both citizens and government agencies, improving services such as waste management, emergency response, and disaster management. The initiative is part of a broader strategy to enhance urban governance and ensure that the city can meet the challenges of rapid growth.
In recent years, Hyderabad has seen significant population growth and urban expansion. To address these challenges, the GHMC has been proactive in implementing technology-driven solutions. Last year, the corporation launched a comprehensive drone-based aerial GIS survey to map all properties within its jurisdiction. This effort aims to streamline property assessments and create a unique identification system for each property, ultimately improving service delivery and urban planning.
As the LiDAR survey progresses, it is expected to provide invaluable insights into the city’s infrastructure needs, helping the government make informed decisions about future developments. By harnessing advanced technology, the Telangana government is taking significant steps toward creating a more efficient and well-planned urban environment for the residents of Hyderabad.
