Vijayawada: The Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) cases are gradually decreasing in the state after nearly 20 patients with GBS symptoms were admitted to hospitals over the last few days.
According to the latest bulletin compiled by the Director of Medical Education (DME) on GBS cases, a total of 12 patients experiencing GBS symptoms are undergoing treatment in hospitals, while eight patients who have recuperated, have been discharged on Thursday. Moreover, no fresh GBS cases were reported in the state on Thursday. Speaking to TOI, DME Dr Narasimha Rao said GBS cases are declining in the state, as eight patients have been discharged, while 12 others are still undergoing treatment. Notably, all three deceased patients—two at Guntur GGH, and one at KGH,Visakhapatnam, were women who had been admitted with GBS symptoms.
“We can attribute the two deaths that occurred at Guntur GGH to GBS, as neurologists confirmed GBS symptoms in the deceased patients. However, ambiguity surrounds the suspected GBS-related death at Visakhapatnam KGH, she also had heart complications,” the DME stated. Stating that the mortality rate of GBS is just around 5- 7% and that 95% of patients recover successfully, the DME said early diagnosis is key to faster recovery.
