Celebrated my birthday with a surprise drive in a Hindustan Ambassador

From the paint to the steelies to the chrome, loved it all. It takes a lot to surprise a car guy like me, but this was really something else

GTO recently shared this with other enthusiasts:

Had an unforgettable drive in an immaculately-maintained HM Ambassador! IIRC, the last I was in an “Amby” was 10-15 years back, the 3 examples being Rudra Sen’s Ambassador, a taxi in Kolkata and Karlosdeville’s Landmaster.

What a majestic machine. Total magic! This drive was a surprise birthday gift from my girl and part of a luxury spa package. Florian Hurel Spa in Bandra & Walkeshwar (link to their Insta) really rolled out the red carpet for us. They sent across a chauffeur-driven Ambassador to pick us up, and it was a beautiful morning drive to Pali Hill. Top-class black coffee & Avocado toast was on the menu, and the spa experience was awesome. Florian Hurel also has a salon, gym (which was quite busy), nail spa etc. Would strongly recommend a visit as the place is an experience in itself, done up in a very classy manner and their service is A+.

Now, back to the most important part, the Ambassador

Walked out of my building, and there is a shiny Ambassador waiting for me. From the paint to the steelies to the chrome, loved it all. It takes a lot to surprise a car guy like me, but this was really something else:

What a backseat. “Sofa” is a more appropriate term:

The Ambassador “Grand” had many contemporary add-ons, including a proper dashboard! Single-DIN headunit with blinking lights reminded me of how we’d salivate over the latest Pioneer launches in the college days. Today, we save up for a secure future, education, land, investments. Then, we’d save up for subwoofers & alloy wheels

Even the rubber trims were in good nick:

Complete with an umbrella, reading light & tissue box. More comfortable than a 75-lakh rupee C-Class:

Moulded roof lining was a big thing for an Ambassador! Get one and you had bragging rights, back in the day:

View of the world outside from an “Amby”. This is how Seths & Sethanis of the 1970s & 1980s moved around, as well as those in the power centers (all politicians, top cops, army chiefs):

Such an elegant place…

Luxury ambience & spa treatment was the ultimate birthday gift, and much needed in the middle of a 3-day celebration:
