SCADA system to streamline water supply in Kurnool

The city faces severe water shortages during summer, making efficient water management crucial to meeting the needs of the 6.5 lakh-strong city population. Officials believe the new system will help improve water supply.

The system was recently installed in Kurnool to enhance services provided by the municipal corporation. It allows real-time monitoring of water levels in sumps and overhead tanks, making supply management more efficient. With an app installed on mobile phones, officials can now track and regulate water distribution in remote mode.

The SCADA system, equipped with sensors and flow meters, helps monitor water velocity in pipes and measure the supply in million litres per day (MLD). It also tracks residual chlorine levels at headwater works and Elevated Level Service Reservoirs (ELSRs), preventing both water wastage and contamination.

Encouraged by the positive outcomes of the basic system, minister Bharath has asked municipal officials to implement an advanced version for better efficiency.

The Vijayawada Municipal Corporation has adopted an advanced SCADA system. Engineers from Kurnool will visit Vijayawada shortly to study its implementation and replicate the model there.

A senior engineer described SCADA as a hassle-free solution for managing water distribution, particularly during peak summer. He said the system’s data-driven software improves reliability and enables accurate demand-supply forecasting.

Despite being surrounded by rivers, Kurnool experiences water shortages, especially in newly developed colonies. To address this, the chief minister recently sanctioned `22 crore for the SCADA project.
