During the Swarnandhra-Swachh Andhra programmes held on Saturday, Collectors of Prakasam, Nellore and Tirupati urged the public to keep their surroundings clean. Prakasam district Collector A. Thameem Ansaria called on people to play their part to avoid single-use plastic. She urged all people to cooperate with the government towards introducing zero-waste markets.
She said that the government authorities are taking steps to reduce the use of single-use plastic and increase the use of bags made of cloth and jute. “The focus is on using the waste for beautification of the city. The vegetable waste will also be converted into compost. Women, especially those in self-help groups (SHGs), have an active role in reducing the use of plastic,” she said.
Meanwhile, SPSR Nellore district Collector O. Anand and Municipal Commissioner Surya Teja participated in the activities at Tadikala Bazaar Centre in Nellore and created awareness among the public about the harm caused by single-use plastic. Mr. Anand also took part in another event at Vikrama Simhapuri University (VSU) later.
Addressing the VSU students, he said that only National Service Scheme (NSS) students get the opportunity to undertake community service programmes and participate in the development of the country. “I too used to participate enthusiastically in NSS during my college days, and participating with you reminds me of those days,” he said.
In a similar event at Town Club Circle, Tirupati district Collector S. Venkateswar asked the people to adopt the concept of ‘Reduce, Reuse, Recycle’ to create a plastic-free environment. He said, “Single-use plastic should not be used in homes, and we should not litter. The Swachh Andhra programmes will be undertaken on a larger scale to ensure cleanliness of the surroundings.”
