The Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) has decided to boycott the MLC election to the Hyderabad Local Authorities Constituency. The party would issue a whip to its corporators instructing them to abstain from the voting and has decided to take action against those who would defy the party line.

This was announced by the working president of the party K.T. Rama Rao in Hyderabad on Saturday (April 19, 2025) at the party’s preparatory meeting for the silver jubilee celebrations scheduled for April 27. The decision comes in the backdrop of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) allegation that BRS has colluded with AIMIM and the ruling Congress to ensure the victory of the MIM candidate.

In the December 2020 elections to the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), the BRS had won 56 seats followed by BJP 48, MIM 44 and Congress two in the 150-member council. However, several BRS corporators including the mayor [Gadwal Vijayalakshmi], deputy mayor [Mothe Srilatha Reddy], former mayor’s (2015-20) [Bonthu Ram Mohan] wife, former deputy mayor [Baba Fasiuddin] switched loyalties to the ruling Congress party after the change of political fortunes in the State in the November 2023 Assembly elections.

KTR alleged that the acts of the Congress government in the name of Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA) and Musi Riverfront Development project, had targeted the poor and middle class families in Hyderabad and gave them distressing times . KTR stated that it was during the BRS rule, construction of several sewerage treatment plants (STPs) was taken up to prevent the flow of sewage water into the Musi. It was also during the BRS rule that the decision to link the twin reservoirs – Osman Sagar and Himayath Sagar – with Godavari water was taken up.
