Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) president Mahesh Kumar Goud launched a scathing attack on the previous Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) government’s record on farmer welfare, recalling how Dalits were tortured and farmers were handcuffed for questioning by the then government.

Addressing media in Nizamabad on Tuesday, he recalled incidents like farmers being lathi-charged, shackled, and even losing their lives in paddy fields during the BRS regime. “People will not forget the wounds inflicted on farmers by the BRS and open support to the anti-farmer black laws brought by the Modi government,” he said.

On the other hand, Congress government in Telangana has become a role model in development and agricultural welfare schemes with the country discussing the schemes. He said the government is organising ‘farmers’ festivals to educate farmers on modern agricultural technologies.

“The BRS government, during its 10-year rule, did nothing for farmers,” he alleged and accused the Oposition party of shedding crocodile tears now. He also accused BRS leaders of making reckless statements and focusing on irrelevant matters instead of development.

Mr. Goud, who hails from Nizamabad, said if desilting is carried out in Nizamsagar and Sriramsagar projects, irrigation can be extended to over 3.5 lakh additional acres. The government will take up this soon.

“The entire nation is now looking at Telangana for its fine rice distribution scheme,” he said. Earlier, Mr. Goud along with Congress leaders dined at the house of a poor beneficiary of fine rice. “No poor family in Telangana will not sleep hungry and have quality rice,” he said.
