Corporators from the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC), currently on a two-week study tour of cities in Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, visited Bengaluru on Tuesday to study development projects by the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP).

BBMP Chief Commissioner Tushar Girinath welcomed them at the Integrated Command and Control Room and briefed them on the city’s development efforts, key challenges and administrative setup. He said BBMP’s main challenges include waste management, roads, street lighting and lake preservation.

Mr.Girinath explained to the VMC corporators about a project aimed at preventing water stagnation during rains. Under the K100 initiative, stormwater is being treated naturally using aquatic plants, which help purify the water. He said 11 km of the 100-km project has been completed so far. He also spoke about the laying of white-top roads, which are designed to last 25 to 30 years with minimal maintenance.

As part of the city’s Climate Action Plan, Bengaluru, with a population of 1.41 crore across eight zones, is focusing on environmental conservation, lake restoration and sustainable development, he added.

Later, VMC Floor Leader Venkata Satyanarayana, who is supervising the tour, briefed BBMP officials on the development initiatives and public services being implemented by the VMC in the city. The corporators also visited K.R. Road and toured the K100 project site at Shanti Nagar. Mr.Satyanarayana expressed gratitude to the Chief Commissioner on behalf of the VMC for the insights.
