Tamil filmmaker Karthik Subbaraj, who was credited as the story writer for Game Changer, has subtly distanced himself from the film’s disastrous outcome.

Once hyped as Ram Charan’s next big leap and Shankar’s landmark political drama, the film turned out to be a massive failure. It was rejected both critically and commercially.

Before the film’s release, Karthik had expressed pride about being associated with a Shankar directorial. “I’m happy to see my story in Shankar sir’s vision. We grew up watching his films, and now seeing my name in his film feels surreal,” he had said.

But after the film’s release and the backlash it received, his tone has changed noticeably.

In his latest interview promoting his own film Retro, Karthik Subbaraj said, “I initially pitched a one-line story about a grounded IAS officer to Shankar sir. Later, it turned into a completely different world. Many writers got involved, and the story and screenplay were changed.”

In simple terms, Karthik has politely washed his hands off the final version of Game Changer. He implies that Shankar ruined the film entirely to suit his own whims and fancies.

Made on a staggering budget of 450 crores, Game Changer was supposed to be producer Dil Raju’s 50th landmark film. Instead, it turned into a nightmare. The film suffered massive losses and faced outright rejection from audiences right from its premiere on Sankranti.

In the end, both Shankar and Karthik Subbaraj ended up as casualties. They were caught in an epic disaster that never really knew what it wanted to be.
