Five individuals have been arrested by the Chandrayangutta police in connection with a child trafficking case, after rescuing a five-year-old kidnapped girl.
The incident came to light on April 20 after a complaint was lodged about the abduction of the child, Mariyam Saadi, near the Mahatma Gandhi statue in the area.
Acting swiftly, police launched an investigation and reviewed CCTV footage, which led them to the residence of the suspects.
“A couple, Syed Javeed Pasha and Shaista Parveen, were taken into custody. During questioning, the two admitted to kidnapping the child and confessed to selling her for ₹1.30 lakh to a woman named Parveen Banu, a resident of Uppal,” said the DCP of South East Zone, Patil Kantilal Subhash.
A police team proceeded to Uppal and rescued the child, who was found in the process of being resold to two individuals, Jawagi Sunitha Kumari and Kappala Rajendra Prasad. All three were immediately apprehended.
“Sunitha Kumari operates a first aid clinic in Uppal, while Rajendra Prasad is an agent at a fertility clinic in Banjara Hills. Both had previously been accused in a child trafficking case registered in Vikhroli police station in East Mumbai,” added the officer.
Investigations revealed that the abduction was planned. In an effort to avoid detection, Javeed Pasha wore a helmet and Shaista Parveen wore a burqa. They also concealed the number plate of their motorcycle with a cloth. The couple travelled across various parts of the city before kidnapping the child from Chandrayangutta.
Police seized several items during the operation, including a scooter, an auto-rickshaw, a car, five mobile phones, and ₹76,000 in cash. Police confirmed that the suspects are part of an organised network engaged in the illegal buying and selling of children.
