Hyderabad: To track wastage and usage of water effectively, Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply & Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB) has launched water audit in the city.As part of this, authorities would install flow metersto measure the water supply under Osman Nagar reservoirs in Tellapur on a trial basis. The flow meters would provide real-time data on water movement through the supply network, allowing the board to analyse the readings to create detailed reports on consumption patterns and identify areas of concern.Officials said that the system would track water flow from the source reservoirs to various distribution points and help them in pinpointing exact locations of leakages or unauthorised connections.”By comparing the meter readings at both source and consumer endpoints, we can calculate transmission losses,” a senior HMWS&SB official said. This is part of HMWS&SB’s comprehensive water audit to evaluate the volume of water distributed to specific regions, measure the actual quantity reaching households, and determine water loss through pipeline leakages and pressure fluctuations. The water board also intends to extend this audit system to other reservoirs after evaluating the results from Osman Nagar. The monitoring would enable the implementation of preventive measures in case of wastage and leakage. Meanwhile, HMWS&SB opted to implementsmart valve technologyfor the distribution pipelines at Osmansagar reservoirs. These automated valves eliminate the requirement for linemen to conduct field visits, as they could be controlled through a mobile application. The smart valve system provides real-time information about water parameters, including quality metrics, volume measurements, and chlorine concentration levels, alongside valve operations. The technology operates entirely on solar power and includes battery backup to ensure uninterrupted functionality regardless of power conditions. This system already demonstrated successful results in its trial implementation at Sanathnagar.
