Thiruvananthapuram: As heavy rains lash across the state, health department issued an alert to districts. Health minister Veena George said hospitals were advised to remain vigilant since the change in weather conditions increased the likelihood of various infectious diseases.“Health facilities that might be affected by flooding should make necessary alternative arrangements. Instructions have been issued to ensure the availability of medicines in all hospitals. Relief camps must operate as per guidelines,” said the minister in a statement issued on Saturday.“To prevent waterborne diseases, it is important to drink only boiled water. People should seek medical attention if symptoms appear. As the rain continues, there is a risk of dengue and leptospirosis. Precautions should be taken to avoid mosquito bites, and measures should be taken to destroy mosquito breeding sites,” she said.“Preventing leptospirosis is also crucial. Those involved in cleaning activities should use personal protective measures like gumboots and gloves. People entering stagnant water should wash their limbs thoroughly with soap. It is essential for those entering water to take doxycycline, a preventive pill for leptospirosis. Children should not play or bathe in stagnant water,” the statement said.“Proper care should be taken to prevent diseases like diarrhoea, jaundice and typhoid. Those affected by jaundice shouldn’t be the ones preparing food, as there is a risk of the disease spreading. They should take precautions and avoid contact with others. The utensils used by a patient shouldn’t be shared with others. Wash hands with soap before eating and after using the toilet,” she added.
