Hyundai plans to expand its SUV product portfolio with a range of new models, featuring multiple powertrains including ICE, hybrid and electric. One of these upcoming Hyundai SUVs is the globally popular Bayon compact crossover, which will arrive in India as a Maruti Fronx rival in mid-2026. In global markets, the Hyundai Bayon is the brand’s smallest SUV, positioned against the Ford EcoSport and Volkswagen T-Cross.
Hyundai Bayon Engine – All-New Petrol

Interestingly, the Bayon will be the first Hyundai to feature the brand’s all-new locally-developed 1.2L TGDi petrol engine. While the exact power and torque outputs of this new engine are yet to be revealed, it’s reported to deliver better torque and drivability than Venue’s 120bhp/172Nm 1.0L petrol engine, while being more compact and fuel-efficient than the Creta’s 160bhp/253Nm, ,1.5L turbo petrol engine.
Hyundai’s new 1.2L turbocharged petrol engine will also power the future hybrid and compact models, as well as some select offerings in the Rs 15 lakh – Rs 20 lakh price bracket. It will comply with the upcoming CAFÉ 3 and BS7 emission and efficiency standards. This new engine will compete against Maruti Suzuki’s 1.2L, 3-cylinder petrol engine used in the Swift hatchback. Maruti’s Z-Series engine will also debut with the strong hybrid tech with the Fronx in 2026.
Gearbox Options:
Globally, the Bayon is offered with two gearbox options – a 6-speed manual and a 7-speed DCT automatic. In India, the compact crossover could be offered with the DCT or e-CVT (depending on the variant and application).
