Encroachments on nalas, lakes dominate Prajavani complaints

Hyderabad: Illegal encroachments on nalas, lakes, and govt lands dominated the grievances submitted during the Hyderabad Prajavani programme on Monday. Of the 58 complaints received, over 60% were about stormwater drain (nala) encroachments, with residents warning that more than half the width of many nalas is now blocked.Locals said unchecked encroachments are worsening urban flooding, with rainwater entering homes and inundating apartment cellars. Damaged vehicles, waterlogged belongings, and sleepless nights have become a recurring nightmare during the monsoon. Residents demanded the widening of the Patny nala near Rasoolpura, Chikoti Gardens, and Prakash Nagar Metro Station. In Ameenpur’s Durga Province Colony, residents reported severe flooding caused by diverted runoff from neighbouring colonies and blocked natural water channels due to recent constructions. In Langer House, locals alleged that a 38-acre lake had shrunk to 24 acres due to encroachments. In Miyapur, citizens flagged illegal occupation of govt mining land estimated to be worth Rs 3,000 crore.Road closures in Anandbagh Colony since 2019 have forced residents to take long detours every day. In Pragathi Nagar, residents alleged encroachment of their community park.HYDRAA additional director Varla Papayya has begun reviewing the complaints for further action.
