This calendar year has been a big one for the Los Angeles Lakers. Back in February, they shocked the basketball world by acquiring Luka Doncic from the Dallas Mavericks in a sudden blockbuster trade in exchange for Anthony Davis. Furthermore, they climbed all the way up to the No. 2 seed in the Western Conference before ending as the No. 3 seed.

Los Angeles ultimately lost in the first round to the Minnesota Timberwolves in the first round, but many would say their best is yet to come. This offseason will be a crucial one for the team as they look to maximize their championship window.

Lakers president Jeanie Buss made a major move on Wednesday to kick things off, though it may not be what most fans expected, and it has many wondering what could be next for the team and Doncic.

The Lakers are likely going to be busy in the free agent and trade markets this summer as they look to bolster their roster. However, it now seems that changes to the roster are not the only ones being made as it has been reported that the Buss family will sell majority ownership to Mark Walter, who also owns the Los Angeles Dodgers of the MLB, for $10 billion (h/t Shams Charania of ESPN).

Following this report, fans and basketball personalities have provided their opinion on what could be next in store for Doncic in Los Angeles.

“Deep pockets for the Luka Doncic era with Mark Walter owning the Lakers,” The Ringer’s Kevin O’Connor wrote on X.

“Luka Doncic’s max deal is about to get deferred until the year 2075,” MLB writer Ben Yoel joked in regards to the Dodgers’ decisions to defer money in their big contracts.

“Jeanie saw that pending Luka extension price + life without LeBron and said see ya later??” Barstool Sports’ Dan Greenberg wrote on X.

“If Mark Walter does half of what he’s done with the Dodgers, the Lakers easily run the nba with luka for the next decade,” one fan wrote on X.

It remains to be seen exactly what this sale means for the Lakers’ future, but it is fair to assume it could have a big impact on the Slovenian native, who is eligible for a contract extension in August.
