In a strong push for climate action, Governor Jishnu Dev Varma has proposed Raj Bhavan and JNTU headquarters to be transformed into models of energy-efficient campuses. He called for a focused three-pronged strategy to address climate change and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

He told this to a team of officers from the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) and Energy Efficiency Services Ltd (EESL) led by media adviser (South) of BEE A. Chandra Sekhara Reddy on Friday. The Governor stated that the three-pronged approach would significantly benefit the economic, environment and society at large.

He underlined the urgent need for coordinated efforts across key sectors by involving all departments, including energy, transport, buildings, rural and urban development, industry and small and medium enterprises (SMEs), in promoting renewable energy and accelerating energy efficiency measures.

“Energy efficiency alone can contribute to mitigating the climate change impacts to over 40%”, he noted. As part of this climate roadmap, the Governor proposed aggressive afforestation efforts led by the forest and environment department with a long-term target to increase Telangana’s green cover to 50% by 2047.

Further, mass awareness campaigns involving all stakeholders – public and private – with a special focus on women and students through schools, colleges and universities to promote energy conservation and sustainable practices, institutional initiatives to drive policy and grass-roots implementation of energy-efficient technologies would also help the efforts.

As part of ongoing outreach efforts, Mr. Chandra Sekhara Reddy along with senior officers of EESL General Managers Adesh Saxena and Jaya Prakash Vuduta briefed the Governor on key developments in the field of energy efficiency.
