CNG Sales Increased 100 Per Cent In Hyderabad: MOP&NG

Hyderabad: The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MOP&NG) has informed that Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) sales in Hyderabad geographical area (GA) has increased from approximately 1.12 lakh kg/day in the financial year (FY 2023–24) to approximately 2.1 lakh kg/day as of June 2025, reflecting more than 100 per cent increase.

The Bhagyanagar Gas Limited (BGL) has informed the Ministry that it is in the process of continuously identifying new locations to cater to the demand. In Telangana, the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB) has authorised nine GAs for development of City Gas Distribution (CGD) infrastructure including one GA spread over Telangana and Karnataka.

The Hyderabad geographical area has been authorized to BGL for the development of CGD network. As on May 31, 2025, the authorized entity has established 83 CNG stations in the GA. These CNG stations cater to approximately 55,000 to 60,000 CNG vehicles per day.

This was stated by Union Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Hardeep Singh Puri while replying to a question raised by the BJP MP Konda Vishweshwar Reddy in Lok Sabha.

The Union Minister further stated that the Central government has taken multiple steps to increase the share of natural gas in primary energy mix. This includes expansion of National Gas Grid Pipeline, expansion of CGD network, setting up of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) Terminals, allocation of domestic gas to CNG (Transport) and Piped Natural Gas (Domestic) PNG(D) as priority sector, allowing marketing and pricing freedom with a ceiling price to gas produced from high pressure and high temperature areas, deep water and ultra-deep water and from coal seams, sustainable alternative towards affordable transportation (SATAT) initiative to promote BioCNG, etc.

In order to increase the reach of natural gas in the country, in addition to authorizing the natural gas pipelines, PNGRB has authorized CGD entities to develop CGD network in 307 geographical areas(GAs) covering almost 100 per cent of the country’s mainland (excluding islands). As on May 31, 2025, various CGD entities have provided 1.50 crores domestic PNG connections and commissioned 8,083 CNG stations against the Minimum Work Programme (MWP) of about 12.6 crore domestic PNG connections and 18,336 CNG stations across the country to be achieved by 2034.

This marks a more than tenfold increase in the number of CNG stations in the country, which stood at 783 in the year 2014.
