Vijay Sethupathi delivered a massive blockbuster with Maharaja and now, he worked with Pandiraaj for Thalaivan Thalaivi. Nithya Menen played leading lady role opposite him and music by Santosh Narayanan has created good buzz for it. Let’s discuss about the film, in detail.

Plot:

Agasaveeran (Vijay Sethupathi) starts fighting with his wife Arasi (Nithya Menen)’s family at the Karuppu Samy Temple. Without inviting him, they decide to tonsure their only child’s hair for the first time. This agitates him and his entire family arrives to support him. When villagers ask them what is the issue, he starts narrating their story.

He married Arasi, after falling in love with her, against her and his family objections. He keeps calling her Perarasi and tells few lies. She accepts everything yet Agasaveeran’s mother (Deepa) and sister (Roshini) start creating issues. What are they? Why did he not invited to tonsure event? Watch the movie to know more.

Analysis:

The movie has Pandiraj’s mark all over it. Taking a simple village setup, he once again created characters that seem typical to rural milieu. He keeps inserting fun into the proceedings at timely intervals, keeping it real and refreshing.

But the writing gets draggy and narrative stumbles upon road block in the second hour. While the couple-  Vijay Sethupathi and Nithya Menen have chemistry, we are not allowed to watch more scenes between in the second hour for some time, giving more importance to tertiary events.

Still, the movie is watchable because of the performances, mainly, Vijay Sethupathi and Nithya Menen. They did not play these sort of characters before anf they are pitch perfect. Sethupathi as an innocent man, who loves his wife and unable to solve issues between her and ladies of his house, does a  brilliant job.

His performance balances the monotonic tone at many places. Nithya Menen is good and Deepa does well. Music by Santosh Narayanan is a plus for the film and the baby role needs a special mention. Overall, with flaws in writing, it still gives a refreshing take on marriage and how to solve issues between couples within family.

Bottomline:

Good performances hold this family tale together.

Rating: 2.75/5
