At least eight people, including five civilians and three attackers, were killed in a “terrorist attack” targeting a judiciary building in southeastern Iran, according to state media reports.
Unknown gunmen stormed judges’ chambers at the judiciary centre in Zahedan, the capital of southeastern Sistan Baluchistan province, according to the judiciary’s Mizan Online.
The attack left five people dead and 13 others injured, according to official sources. In a separate report, the state-run IRNA news agency confirmed that three assailants were also killed during the incident.
According to reports, gunmen linked to the Sunni militant group Jaish al-Adl carried out the attack on the courthouse in Zahedan.
The semi-official Fars news agency said that the assault may have involved a suicide bomber, with both gunfire and explosions reported near the courthouse.
Jaish al-Adl reportedly claimed responsibility for the attack in a statement. The Mehr news agency noted that several people injured in the incident were taken to the hospital for treatment.
Citing eyewitnesses, the Baluch rights group HAALVSH stated that multiple judiciary officials and security personnel were killed or injured when the attackers stormed the judges’ chambers.
