Vijayawada: BC Welfare Minister, S Savita, has claimed that the state government is relentlessly working for development of the BC, SC and ST hostels and “cleared the dues left behind” by the previous government.

Savita alleged on Sunday that, during the YSRC term, “not a single paisa” had been allotted for the welfare of students living in hostels. Refuting allegations of YSRC of deteriorating social welfare hostels, she challenged them to show any development of welfare hostels during their rule.

The minister said that the present government cleared a payment backlog of `150 crore the previous dispensation owed to BC students. “We also allocated funds for hostel repairs and facilities. The present government released `18 crore for kitchen equipment and `13 crore for hostel maintenance, along with `25 crore for constructing residential rooms in hostels.

“We have provided 1 lakh blankets to students of BC hostels and are set to deliver another 2 lakh soon.”

The minister affirmed that the TD-led government was dedicated to the development of the Rayalaseema region through extensive investment in irrigation and drinking water projects, totalling `12,441 crore from 2014 to 2019.

The coalition government, she said, has been diligently paying diet bills and cosmetic charges for the welfare of these students. “While this government is allocating funds for BC hostels, we are also urging our MLAs to contribute their funds for further development,” Savita stated.
