Director Lokesh Kanagaraj has created a unique filmmaking style of his own, marked by his storytelling approach, lighting, action design, and music choices. The trailer of “Coolie” bears all these familiar trademarks, making it instantly recognizable as a Lokesh film.
However, what sets “Coolie” apart is the towering presence of Superstar Rajinikanth. His charisma and iconic performance style inject a fresh energy into Lokesh’s universe. So, while “Coolie” feels familiar, it also feels distinctly different. It is like same dish with new seasoning.
Rajinikanth plays the titular role of a coolie (port laborer), and the trailer hints at a gang hunting for him. Nagarjuna Akkineni plays a negative role for the first time in his career, while Malayalam actor Soubin Shahir also appears as a villain. Bollywood icon Aamir Khan makes a mysterious appearance. But his face and character details are kept under wraps.
The trailer introduces several characters without giving away the plot. Shruti Haasan, as Sathyaraj’s daughter, seeks Rajinikanth’s help, suggesting an emotional thread. While it may not be the most sharply edited trailer in Lokesh’s filmography, the sheer star power on display makes it an engaging watch.
The only letdowns are Anirudh Ravichander’s background score and the action choreography by Anbariv, which feels repetitive.
“Coolie” is set for August 14, 2025 release in Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, and Malayalam.
