Robbery suspect escapes from police custody at Hyderabad’s Gandhi Hospital

Hyderabad: A 19-year-old offender, arrested by the Begumpet police for allegedly robbing a bus driver near Jubilee Bus Station on Aug 15, has escaped from police custody by sneaking out of a toilet at Gandhi Hospital. Based on the complaint of the Begumpet police, their Chilkalguda counterparts registered a case and launched a manhunt to nab the accused.Around 3.30am on Aug 15, two robbers entered an RTC bus coming to JBS from Srisailam when it stopped at a traffic signal. They picked up an argument with the driver without any provocation. “The duo damaged the ticketing machine by smashing it to the floor and stole 1,000 cash in the driver’s possession,” the Begumpet police said.On the complaint of the driver, a robbery case was registered at the Begumpet police station on Aug 15. By analysing CCTV footage near the crime scene, the Begumpet crime team arrested the duo near JBS the same day. Prior to court production, the two offenders were taken to Gandhi Hospital for medical examination on Aug 16.At 5.30pm, one of the accused, Sohail Khan, 19, of Sikh Village, requested police to let him use the toilet in front of the out-patient block. “He sneaked out of the toilet’s ventilator and escaped. As he did not come out even after 10 minutes, police checked inside the toilet and discovered he gave the slip. On their complaint, a case was registered against Sohail for escaping from police custody,” Chilkalguda inspector B Anudeep said.
