Understanding the Land Rover – Range Rover SUV hierarchy

The “true” Land Rover – Range Rover brand experience starts with the Defender, Range Rover Sport and the Range Rover (LWB in India).

GTO recently shared this with other enthusiasts:

The RR Sport has incredible panache & style. The Land Rover & Range Rover spread of SUVs over 1 crore are simply best-in-classand properly differentiated not just from the market offerings, but even from each other.

2.5 crore rupees & up = The Range Rover.
Understanding the Land Rover – Range Rover SUV hierarchy

This is the flagship Range Rover, the ultimate bad boy SUV. We get the LWB version in India which makes it a hit with chauffeur-driven industrialists & celebs. Outstanding space, luxury, comfort, opulence, style, engine options (including a V8 petrol, although the 3.0 diesel is the best-seller for practical reasons). This car is what Range Rover does best. What the S-Class is to Mercedes, this car is to Range Rover.

Trivia = Vogue, Autobiography etc. are variant names. Many people mistake them for the model name.

1.7 crore rupees & up = 2nd in the pecking order is the Range Rover Sport (subject of this review).

Smaller than THE Range Rover above, yet big enough. It shares a whole lot of components, so the Sport is really like the younger brother of the flagship Range Rover. Same design language, same engines, platform, interior design etc. The Sport is targeted toward self-driven owners. While the Range Rover LWB is like a cruise ship on the open road and corners soft like a yacht, the Sport can actually hold its own through fast corners and is dynamically more accomplished. The Sport is fun to drive, while the Range Rover LWB is the plushest. The standard Sport in India gets the 3.0L turbo-diesel or turbo-petrol, while there is a wild SVR edition available too.

1.3 crore rupees & up = A new, hugely popular entrant to the 1-crore club is the drop-dead handsome Defender.

It’s stylish, practical, robust, the air suspension is comfortable and it can off-road hard! Has a 3rd-row of seats for kids (unlike the Sport). The butch feel & styling are very endearing, and this car is incredibly practical for work, play and long-distance trips. Has a wide range of engines (in India too, there is a 5.0 V8 starting at 1.5 crores), although owners say that the entry-level 2.0 petrol isn’t too bad. It does the job and I can attest to that after having put some km on the tester.

Anything below these three SUVs (Velar, Evoque, Discovery Sport etc.) – they are the A Class, 1-Series and A3 of the Land Rover & Range Rover family. The “true” Land Rover – Range Rover brand experience starts only with the Defender, Range Rover Sport and the Range Rover (LWB in India).
