HYDRAA launches canal restoration drive

Hyderabad: The Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA) has launched a canal restoration drive at Errakunta in Thorrur village, Hayathnagar mandal, Ranga Reddy district, following complaints from residents about encroachments and blockages.According to officials, the canal that connects Errakunta tank to Polkammakunta, along with the sluice channel of the tank, was obstructed. Villagers brought the issue to HYDRAA’s attention through its public grievance forum, Prajavani, after repeated flooding concerns and loss of natural water flow.Acting on these petitions, HYDRAA officials, in coordination with the irrigation and revenue departments, inspected the site and began work on Friday. “A 10-metre-wide rock formation was blocking the link between the sluice and the canal. It is being removed to enable proper connectivity,” officials said.Once the 300-metre stretch of the canal is fully restored, Errakunta and Polkammakunta tanks will be interlinked, improving water storage and flow between the two water bodies. Officials added that the project would also ease flooding in nearby agricultural fields and help recharge groundwater.
