Organs of brain-dead youth save 3 lives in Guntur

Vijayawada: In a moving act of generosity, the kidneys and liver of a 21-year-old brain-dead youth were transplanted to three recipients, giving them a new lease of life at AIIMS Mangalagiri and Aster Ramesh Hospital, Guntur, on Tuesday. His corneas were also donated and stored at LV Prasad Eye Bank to help future patients in need. According to the information, the donor, identified as I Nagendra Kumar, a 21-year-old resident of Yousufguda of Hyderabad, was referred to AIIMS Mangalagiri and admitted with post intra-procedural rupture of the vein of Galen malformation with intraventricular haemorrhage (IVH), status post external ventricular drain (EVD), and decompressive craniotomy. Despite the best medical efforts, he was declared brain stem dead on Sept 29.On the occasion, AIIMS Mangalagiri medical superintendent Dr AR Nataraj, AIIMS Mangalagiri dean academics professor Dr Desu Rama Mohan, and K Dinesh, mandal revenue officer (MRO), along with other doctors, felicitated the donor’s family in recognition of their humanitarian gesture. They expressed heartfelt gratitude to the donor’s family for their noble gesture and acknowledged the coordinated efforts of the medical, nursing, and transplant teams of AIIMS Mangalagiri, as well as the Jeevandan programme.
