Water supply pipeline to be laid from Ghanpur to Osman Sagar in Hyderabad

Hyderabad: Steps are being taken to initiate the construction of a two-line, 56-km-long pipeline from Ghanpur to Osman Sagar under the Godavari Drinking Water Supply Scheme (GDWSS) phases-II and III.On Saturday, officials inspected key stretches, including road crossings and tunnelling zones, to identify and address potential challenges before the commencement of the work. During the inspection, HMWSSB MD Ashok Reddy directed officials to begin the construction of the 80 million-litre capacity and water treatment plants (WTPs) at Ghanpur at the earliest.Under the GDWSS phase I, the water board is already drawing 10 TMC water from the Yellampalli project to cater to Hyderabad’s drinking water needs. The next phases of the project will enable the utilisation of an additional 20 TMC from the Mallanna Sagar reservoir. Of this, 17.5 TMC will be dedicated to meet the city’s drinking water requirements, while the remaining 2.5 TMC will be used to revive the twin reservoirs as part of the Musi river rejuvenation initiative. The project offers dual benefits — meeting Hyderabad’s growing drinking water demand and supporting ecological restoration through Musi purification. As part of the works, pump houses, substations, and a 3,000-mm dia transmission pipeline will be constructed from Mallanna Sagar to Ghanpur. In addition, 1,170 MLD-capacity WTPs will be set up at Ghanpur and Shamirpet, along with the pumping main from Ghanpur to Muthangi.
