Indian student shot dead in Texas; investigation underway | India News

A 27-year-old student from Hyderabad was shot dead by unidentified attackers at a gas station in Dallas, Texas, on Friday, local authorities confirmed on Saturday.

The deceased, Chandrashekar Pole, was working part-time at the gas station when the shooting occurred, allegedly during a robbery attempt, reported PTI. The Dallas Police Department has launched a probe into the killing. “We are actively investigating the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident and working to bring clarity to the case,” a police spokesperson said.

Chandrashekar, who had completed his Bachelor of Dental Surgery in Hyderabad, moved to the US two years ago to pursue a Master’s degree in Data Analytics at the University of North Texas, Denton. His brother, Damodar, told reporters that he had finished the course six months ago and was looking for a job. To manage his expenses, he had taken up a part-time job at the gas station.

Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy expressed deep sorrow over the student’s death and offered condolences to his family. He assured that the state government would provide full assistance to ensure the repatriation of Chandrashekar’s mortal remains.

The Dallas County Medical Examiner’s Office has not yet issued the official cause of death or the death certificate, both of which are essential for the repatriation process. BRS MLA T Harish Rao described the killing as “tragic” and said that he, along with other party leaders, visited the grieving family to offer condolences.

The Consulate General of India (CGI) in Houston, which covers the state of Texas, said it is coordinating closely with the local authorities and the deceased’s family. In a post on X, the consulate stated that the investigation is in progress and that it is “following up closely with them, and providing continued support to the family during this difficult time.”

“We are providing all possible consular assistance to the family, including facilitating communication with local authorities and expediting necessary paperwork,” a CGI official said. The official added that repatriation procedures require a death certificate and a No Objection Certificate from the consulate, among other legal documents.
